5 best dog movies of all time

Hey there, fellow furbaby friends!

We love anything and everything about dogs, right? Good thing Hollywood has devoted enough films featuring such adorable pups to last us a lifetime. However, some stand out from the rest. Here are our five best dog movies of all time!

Lady and the Tramp
This Disney classic will always be part of any dog lover’s top dog movie list. Ever since its outing in 1955 (yep that’s more than 50 YEARS ago), it continues to be one of the most well-loved Disney movies of all time. Featuring the beautiful American Cocker Spaniel named Lady and a stray male mutt called Tramp, follow their story as they embark on a truly romantic adventure! Their story continues to evolve. This classic was soon followed by Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure in 2001 and a live-action remake on Disney+. None, however, will ever equal the original, at least in our own estimates.

Benji
Who can ever forget the mixed breed lovefest that is Benji? Released in 1974, it was groundbreaking in a way that it put the spotlight on mixed breed dogs which inspired more people to adopt dogs from shelters. This is largely due to the film’s plot, which is inspiring as well. Benji is a stray golden mixed breed dog who attempts to rescue child protagonists, Cindy and Paul, who are kidnapped by a band of thieves. So beloved was this movie that it made USD 45 million on an initial budget of USD 500,000. Pretty amazing, huh? While nothing can beat the classic, an updated version was released on Netflix in 2018 with the latest iteration created by the son of the original film’s director!

Marley & Me
Marley and Me is one movie that will definitely pull on those heartstrings. Based on a book by journalist John Grogan, the film centres on Marley, an unruly Labrador Retriever and how the family learned to make him a part of their family despite initial difficulties. Beautiful and heartbreaking, this 2008 comedy-drama shows why dog lovers consider their beloved furry companions not as pets but as members of the family.

Hachi
Based on the story of Hachiko, an Akita dog who lived in Japan in the 1920s, this American adaptation tells the story of Hachi. This Akita dog is so devoted to its human, music professor, Parker Wilson. The entire film revolves around this theme which is testament to the unbreakable bond between man and his best friend.

101 Dalmatians
It’s hard to believe that this film was released in the early 60s, considering that the characters continue to be part of the current consciousness. That’s how iconic this film is! Yet another Disney creation, it tells the story of a litter of dalmatians kidnapped by the Disney supervillain, Cruella de Ville (a marvellous play of words, don’t you think?). Their rescue led to the freedom of 84 more dalmatian puppies hence the whopping 101 total! A live-action remake was released in 1996 with the amazing Glenn Close playing Cruella de Ville. And the remakes keep on coming! There’s a new one in production to be released in 2021!
