Take a leap of faith

Have you ever imagined your life not having to worry about your finances? Have you ever considered financial freedom as part of your goal? If not, believe us when we say you should!

Financial freedom is something that most people want to achieve in the future. While a lot of people are already familiar with it, some are still completely clueless about it. To those who don’t know, having financial freedom doesn’t mean being rich or having lots of money. It simply means having enough residual money to cover your living expenses while using your time to do other things you enjoy, rather than just working to earn money. With the right financial planning, you too can achieve financial freedom.

We’ve interviewed Lee Wei Han, a Senior Financial Consultant from Great Eastern Financial Advisers (GEFA), to share his secrets on how to be financially stable and what took him to where he is now.

Tell us about yourself? What you do at work, and what you’re like after hours?

At work, what I do is study and share financial planning tips. After work, I usually just chill with my friends.

What’s your deepest darkest secret?

I watch a lot of Korean Drama.

What’s your motto for success?

My motto is simple – Never give up.

So why did you choose to go into the agency side of the business?

It is my freedom of choice and I believe that this industry will help me grow career-wise.

How did you get to where you are today?

I am where I am today because I took a leap of faith. I believed in something that I know will help me and a lot of people financially.

Asia is a promising market for insurance and the sector is still growing despite grim market conditions. How has the perception of being an agent shifted since you first joined the industry?

I learned that you have to be constantly adaptive in this industry. I also believe that continuously learning new skills is very important, as you can always use this during uncertain times.

What’s the biggest career challenge that you’ve faced so far?

The thing with this industry is that you always have to be patient. It is not easy to work in insurance, but you just have to work hard and be consistent so one day, you’ll reap the fruits of your hard work.

What’s a typical day like for you?

A typical day at work includes a lot of strategising, meeting appointments, and reflection at the end of the day. I think reflecting at the end of the day helps me know my next move and how I can make each day at work better.

What sort of advice would you give candidates looking to go into or switch to insurance?

To those who would like to be in the insurance industry, always have a never say die attitude and be genuine. As I’ve said, this industry is not easy. With hard work together with the right mindset, you can be successful too.

Here are 5 financial tips from Lee Wei Han:

  1. Do not solely rely on your income to create wealth. Consider your options and expand your investments.
  2. Make sure you have a small portion of higher-risk investments. Understand the risks when investing. Note that with the right investment, you’ll get more income.
  3. Don’t go crazy and check your investment portfolio every day, every minute. Be patient and trust the process.
  4. Plan early. This will help you understand the process of insurance and why it is important in reaching your financial goals.
  5. Life is about risk management. If you know in detail what you are going to do during uncertain times, then you are already good.
